Everyone Relies On You But Who Really Knows You?
You’re not arguing about the problem any more. You’re reacting to the threat of the conversation itself.
Have you ever had the same conversation so many times that you already know how it will end before it even begins?
At home, it might be about money, parenting, intimacy or feeling neglected.
At work, it might be deadlines, expectations, workload or conflict with a colleague.
Then someone uses that tone.
Your body tenses. Your heart races. You prepare to defend yourself, withdraw, shut down or agree just to make it stop.
And suddenly, you're no longer two people trying to solve a problem.
You're two nervous systems trying to protect themselves.
When communication repeatedly leads to conflict, your brain can begin to associate even the start of a conversation with threat.
💡 Try this next time:
Before responding, notice what's happening in your body.
Ask yourself: Am I responding to what is being said right now, or am I preparing for what I fear will happen next?
Sometimes the first step towards better communication isn't finding the right words.
It's creating enough emotional safety to actually hear each other.
If this pattern feels familiar, whether at work or at home, it's something we can work through together.
